Mason County, in the western part of Central Illinois, was formed from parts of Menard and Tazewell Counties in 1841. Menard County had, itself, been formed from the northwestern portion of Sangamon County in 1838. Therefore, depending on what time frame you're researching in Mason County, records might be found in Mason, Menard, Sangamon, and/or Tazewell counties. Covering 583.94 square miles, Mason County's population in 2010 was 14,666 as estimated by the Census Bureau. Mason County, Illinois was named for Mason County, Kentucky, which had been named for political leader, George Mason. There are currently 13 townships in Mason County: Allen Grove, Bath, Crane Creek, Forest City, Havana, Kilbourne, Lynchburg, Manito, Mason City, Pennsylvania, Quiver, Salt Creek, and Sherman.
